Family of Mother Killed by Police During Shootout Settles Lawsuit Against City of Stockton

STOCKTON, Calif., July 24, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The family of Misty Holt-Singh, who was killed during a shootout between police and three gunmen, settled the lawsuit filed against the City of Stockton over the incident.

"This is a bittersweet day for our entire family," said Paul Singh, Misty Holt-Singh's husband. "I am grateful that the legal process is over, but the loss of Misty has left a void in our hearts that will never be filled."

On July 16, 2014, Misty Holt-Singh, a devoted 41-year-old wife and mother-of-two, went to the Bank of the West in Stockton, California. She was making an ATM withdrawal at the bank while her then 12-year-old daughter sat in the car. At the same time, three armed robbers were in the process of robbing the bank, ended up pulling Misty inside, and later fled with three hostages—including Misty. A high-speed pursuit with the bank robbers followed through populated city streets, at times with over 50 police vehicles in pursuit and air support overhead. The pursuit ended with 32 Stockton Police officers firing over 600 bullets into the perpetrators' disabled vehicle, tragically killing Misty.

"We are glad that this matter is now settled," said attorney Gregory L. Bentley. "Misty Holt-Singh's family, including her husband and their children, can now focus on healing and mourning the loss of a great woman and mother without the extra stress of protracted litigation." As part of the settlement, the City agreed to honor Misty by naming a street or park in her name. The City will work with Paul Singh in bringing this to fruition. "We are very appreciative of the gesture, and we look forward to healing as a family and community," added Paul Singh.

The Police Foundation, a research group in Washington, D.C., conducted an independent review of the shooting after the fact and determined that the 600 rounds fired "were excessive and unnecessary." The case name is Paul Singh, et al. v. City of Stockton, et al.
