Won Mega Millions? Lottery Lawyer Offers 5 First Steps

Share:

New York, NY, July 24, 2018 --(PR.com)-- With the Mega Millions jackpot at $512 million, now is the perfect time to know what steps to take in case you win.

Jason M. Kurland, known as The Lottery Lawyer, shares this advice:

1. Verify the numbers: If you think you've won, verify the winning numbers on the official Mega Millions website, then make sure your ticket not only has those same numbers but the correct drawing date.

2. Sign the back: The ticket becomes official only when you sign the back. It's very important to write small, leaving plenty of room next to your signature. After meeting with an attorney, you may want to claim the ticket in the name of a trust, partnership or other entity type. The space next to your name will allow you to also write "member," "partner," or "trustee," for example.

3. Copy and hide the ticket: Once signed, immediately photocopy the front and back of the ticket, then put the ticket in the safest place possible – ideally a safe deposit box. From now on, you will only work with a copy of the winning ticket, not the original.

4. Keep quiet: Aside from immediate family and close friends, no one should know you've won. Otherwise, long-lost friends and family will come out of the woodwork wanting a piece of your newfound fortune.

5. Disappear: Leave town on the day you claim your prize. The world, and the media that serves it, will want to meet the latest millionaire, whether for news stories, charitable donations, other solicitations or simple curiosity. For a few days, disappear with your loved ones.
