Boulangerie St-Méthode to Stop Making Gluten-free Bread

ST-MÉTHODE, QC, July 25, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Boulangerie St-Méthode, the only company to offer fresh never-frozen gluten-free bread delivered to a large network of grocery stores, would like to inform consumers that it is ceasing production on this line of products. The last delivery will be on September 1, 2018. Despite excellent results in the past, the company will no longer be able to offer its range of gluten-free breads at competitive prices that meet the standards for quality that have made its products successful.

This is a business decision that has been made despite Boulangerie St‑Méthode's major investments in the innovative product line. Variations in the quality of the basic ingredients for gluten-free bread have forced the company to change suppliers, which has led to significant increases in production costs.

After over a year of efforts and multiple attempts, the family business remains unable to find a local or foreign supplier whose basic ingredients meet the company's standards for quality at a cost that would keep its gluten-free bread affordable for all consumers.

"We know that many consumers, including those with gluten intolerance or hypersensitivity, have adopted our products," said Benoît Faucher, President of Boulangerie St-Méthode. "In order to make the transition easier, we have already informed all our partners and grocery stores so that they can find other solutions among the products available on the market."

However, Boulangerie St-Méthode will continue to support Fondation québécoise de la maladie cœliaque, which it has supported since it launched its gluten-free line in 2013. "We are sad to be ceasing production of our gluten-free bread. We developed a number of innovations for the line, always with consumer health in mind," added Faucher.

The company does not expect any job losses. The production facilities, which are entirely gluten-free, will be adapted for other existing products. Boulangerie St-Méthode is known throughout Quebec for its bread made with 100% Quebec wheat flour and quality ingredients that are verified GMO-free, minimally processed, and rich in nutrients. The bakery will continue to innovate for the benefit of consumers, offering fresh quality products made by the best artisans in Quebec.
