Infrasense Conducts QA for a Recently Paved Road in Virginia Beach, Virginia Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)


In the middle of a busy and exciting Summer 2018, Infrasense conducted a ground penetrating radar survey and report on a multilane roadway in Virginia Beach, VA. The project provided the client with subsurface data from all lanes showing locations of delamination with moisture ingress, as well as layer thickness data at over 16,000 GPS coordinates.

This June, Infrasense conducted a non-destructive survey and report for a 2.3-mile section of a multilane roadway, in Virginia Beach, VA. The project provided the client with data from all 4 driving lanes, both outer shoulder lines, and all turn lanes within the section. Pavement layer thicknesses were plotted along with recommended coring locations where our experienced GPR analysts found evidence of delamination with moisture below the roadway surface. The survey was conducted at driving speed in just a couple of hours with no closures, no disruption to traffic, and zero impact to the integrity of the road.

The GPR data collection system included a pair of 1 GHz horn antennas and a SIR-30 control unit, both manufactured by GSSI in the United States. The final report included quantitative results of the condition and layer thicknesses in spreadsheet format along with station numbering and GPS coordinates. In addition, plots of the pavement structure and condition were provided.

The GPR pavement surveys are carried out according to ASTM D4748-10. The resulting data shows a cross-sectional slice of the pavement strata at various offsets. Each slice includes the surface, and any material change in the first few feet below the surface.
