Six presenters look at recent events to reflect on food policy at 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting

Food fraud and problems with food safety erode the trust of consumers in the food supply. Food safety is at the forefront of numerous headlines on foodborne outbreaks. Internationally, the food system and how consumers purchase food is changing rapidly. Ensuring the safety of the food supply and moving to proactive rather than a reactive approach is a shared responsibility among many different actors in the global food supply chain.

In the Track – Lightning Session "Food Fraud, Food Safety, and Public Policy," organized by the AAEA Food Safety and Nutrition Section and the AAEA Senior Section, six researchers look at the impacts of food fraud, the value of trust in the safety of food traded internationally, the impacts of foodborne illness on the U.S. population, and the global impact of the FDA's Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

Presenters in this session say that "Rulemaking in general is under greater scrutiny, and stakeholders, both public and private, care about food safety. You don't have to look further than recent headlines on foodborne outbreaks in things like romaine lettuce, cut vegetables and melons, and dry cereal to understand that these things are having an impact, and regulations designed to prevent them from occurring can have a substantial impact on human health."

Over 1,600 participants are expected to attend the 2018 AAEA Annual Meeting, which will take place on August 5- August 7 at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C. This session is on Monday, August 6, from 1:00 – 2:30 pm.
