The Historic Estate Gives Back To Local Community Through Immersive School Program Initiatives

WOODSIDE, Calif. (PRWEB) July 25, 2018

Filoli today announced new school programming initiatives for students in first through eighth grades for the 2018-2019 school year. For the last 30+ years, Filoli's school programs have offered immersive, hands-on opportunities for thousands of students, including children from underserved communities, to experience the Bay Area estate's abundant gardens, vast nature preserve, meaningful pieces of art and historical relevance. This academic year, the historic estate will offer two new school programs, including Nature in the Garden and a Plein Air Art Exploration, in addition to its completely revitalized House and Garden visit and Nature Hikes. Programs have been realigned with current curriculum standards and Filoli now provides nature notebooks and experience guides to help connect students to the material on their field trip and when back in the classroom.

School Program Initiatives

House and Garden Tours will be offered to students in first through fifth grades. Students will be led by chaperones and teachers on a self-guided experience through the historic house and garden with an activity guide and interactive stations. Volunteers will lead activities and brief talks helping to connect students to the abundance of art, traditional architecture and individuals who have helped steward the estate.

Nature Hikes on the 654-acre property will be available to students in third, fourth and fifth grades. The nature hikes will provide students a rich experience of hiking through five ecosystems represented throughout Filoli's nature preserve where they will encounter newts, scat and ancient oaks and learning how people and animals are interconnected with each other and the land. Along the way, students will receive a custom nature journal to record their observations, giving them an opportunity to become hands-on scientists and providing a platform to continue learning back in the classroom.

Starting in the spring of 2019, the Nature in the Garden School Program will be tailored towards students in first and second grade. Students will have the opportunity to learn about pollination, how food grows in the vegetable gardens, the fruiting trees and falling leaves in the orchard, and more. Filoli professional interpretative staff and volunteer docents will partner to present programs that explore the garden's life cycles with the young students, encouraging them to have hands on experiences with everything the beautiful Filoli gardens have to offer.

Also in 2019, the brand-new Plein Art Exploration program will be geared towards students in third through eighth grades. Students will experience the tranquility and beauty of Filoli's Garden and Nature preserve while learning to paint and draw in the open air.

Filoli Gives Back

Filoli is proud to give back to its local community through its widely popular school programs, which have provided unique learning experiences to thousands of students over the last 30+ years. All school programs are underwritten to reduce the fees passed on to schools. Scholarships and transportation funds will be available to schools that serve a high percentage of low-income families.

In 2018, Filoli received critical support for the school program redevelopment from an anonymous donor and the EACH Foundation as well as support from the Friends of Filoli Volunteers. Filoli is committed to an annual fundraising initiative to support the school programs for our community. The Fund-A-Need at Filoli's upcoming Fall Gala will be dedicated to Filoli's School Programs.
