The Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) today presented Dr.
Larry Walker, co-editor in chief for the journal "Industrial
Biotechnology," with the third annual BIO Leadership and Legacy Award in
Industrial Biotechnology and Agriculture. The award presentation took
place during a lunch plenary session at the 2018 BIO World Congress on
Industrial Biotechnology. The world's largest industrial biotechnology
and partnering event was held July 16-19, 2018 at the Pennsylvania
Convention Center in Philadelphia.

Reflecting on this extensive career as an academic, studying and working
closely with several American universities, Dr. Walker noted the
industry's influence on his success.

"You folks have had a big impact on how I think about innovation,
probably more so than my academic colleagues, probably because you're
out there doing it," said Dr. Walker. "It's the people here that has had
a major impact."

"Dr. Larry Walker has been a tireless advocate for STEM education and
industrial biotech innovation throughout his career that spans more than
three decades," added Brent Erickson, executive vice president of BIO's
Industrial & Environmental Section. "The BIO Leadership and Legacy Award
was created to honor an individual who has dedicated a significant
portion of their career to growing the biobased economy. The combination
of his careers in teaching, researching and covering the industrial
biotechnology field makes him the perfect recipient for the Leadership
and Legacy Award."

Dr. Walker taught for more than 30 years in the Agricultural and
Biological Engineering Department at Cornell University and has led
multidiscipline research activities in a variety of disciplines.
Additionally, Dr. Walker directed Cornell's Biofuel Research Laboratory
for five years.

Dr. Walker has served in numerous regional and national leadership
roles. Since 2010, he has served as the Co-Editor in Chief for the
journal "Industrial Biotechnology" where he has had the privilege of
chronicling the exciting innovations that are coming out of our
industrial biotechnology community.

As the third recipient of the Leadership and Legacy Award, Dr. Larry
Walker joins Dr. Gord Surgeoner, Ontario Agri-Food Technologies, and Dr.
Ganesh Kishore, Managing Partner, Spruce Capital Partners, as recipients
of the Leadership and Legacy Award in Industrial Biotechnology and
Agriculture.
