Bringing Rural High-Speed Internet to Alderville First Nation and Northumberland County

MONTREAL and PLANO, Texas (PRWEB) March 22, 2018

In partnership with Baicells Technologies and Broadnet Telecom, local Wireless Internet Service Provider Rice Lake Wireless will be providing cost effective, high speed internet and data services to the First Nation and community in and around the region of Rice Lake, Ontario, Canada.

The project implementation will be using the latest breakthrough LTE technology from Baicells in the 3.65 GHz spectrum capable of overcoming issues of poor penetration resulting from dense foliage and generally non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments. "The terrain challenges make it difficult for the community to receive fast and reliable broadband services, and moreover, it is generally cost prohibitive to consider services from the traditional network service providers," acknowledged Reese Simpson, Economic Development Officer for Alderville First Nation. "Our people have been isolated and want to feel a part of the wider digital community."

Baicells LTE broadband wireless access technology will allow members of Alderville First Nation and immediate surrounding areas access to cost effective and enhanced broadband services commencing April 2018. Using the Baicells Nova-233 2x1W tower-mounted eNodeB LTE base stations and outdoor user equipment affixed to customer locations to maximize penetration in the NLOS conditions, the service will permit members access to the global economy, online community services, and other applications that will transform and enrich the community experience.

Baicells Nova-233 eNodeB can provide up to 112 Mbps downlink and 20 Mbps uplink, serving as many as 96 concurrent users per LTE base station. The Baicells outdoor user equipment connects to in-home routers, which then converts the signal to Wi-Fi to allow mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and other smart devices to connect to the service.

Plans are being prepared to deploy other services to complement the broadband data transmission.

"Baicells's fixed wireless LTE was conceived specifically to enable broadband for underserved populations," explained Patrick Leary, President of Baicells Technologies North America. "What that means is that we've redesigned standards-based LTE to be both cost-realistic for very low density deployments and operationally simple so anyone with a basic IT background can deploy it. LTE is an exceptional technology to solve these access problems, but the cost and complexity had to be removed to put it to work for rural broadband."

"Alderville First Nation (AFN) members are the caretakers of our Traditional Territory. Up to now, the few people among our community who had internet service complained it was either too expensive or they had quality issues. We are excited about bringing the reliability and power of LTE to serve not only our residents but also our visitors at a reasonable cost. Broadnet, known as a leader in wireless networks integration, recommended LTE and the Baicells products to best meet our needs. Their cooperation with Rice Lake Wireless, the Canadian Federal Government, and the Provincial ‘Connect Canada' project has made this possible," stated AFN Chief James Marsden.

Within 12 months the service is expected to cover the Rice Lake area, with the potential to expand and reach thousands of subscribers in numerous under-served areas.
