The Los Angeles area clinic comments on a recent article that the need to address gum issues in a timely fashion has never been so clear.

LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) January 18, 2018

A December 4 article on CBS News reports on a decade-long tracking study looking at the oral health of some 122,000 Americans. The study found a correlation between bacteria related to gum disease and the incidence of esophageal cancer. In particular, a bacterial species known as Tannerella forsythia appeared to be linked with a 21 percent increase in the odds of an individual experiencing an esophageal tumor. Los Angeles area clinic Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implant Center says that, together with a number of indicators of a link between gum problems, heart disease, and diabetes, it has become clearer than ever that good oral health is an essential part of overall good health. The center adds that it's worth noting that esophageal cancer is an illness with a fairly high death rate and reportedly is the sixth most common cause of cancer death worldwide.

While the reason for the correlation between periodontal disease and esophageal cancer has not yet been proven to be causal, it's long been very clear that gum disease and it's more virulent relative, periodontitis, require rapid attention, says Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implant Center. For many of us, such unpleasant symptoms as bleeding gums and halitosis (aka bad breath), are reason enough to seek treatment immediately. And the lose teeth that often accompany more advanced periodontal problems are an alarming symptom that should lead an individual to contact a periodontist as soon as possible. The center notes that, left untreated, gum issues like periodontitis can lead to a downward cycle in which loose teeth lead to tooth loss, and tooth loss leads to bone loss.

Beverly Hills Periodontics & Dental Implant Center notes that the traditional solutions to missing teeth – bridgework and dentures – are definitely much better than nothing, but they do not address bone loss. It adds that dental implants are definitely the gold standard solution because they not only provide patients with replacement teeth that are virtually identical to real teeth and require only standard dental hygiene to care for, they are the only known solution to actually address the issue of bone loss.

The center adds that, while it's very proud of its work providing implants to people who need them, it's obviously better to stop tooth loss before it starts by avoiding gum disease through proper dental hygiene, or by treating it immediately should it occur. The center notes that it encourages people who may be experiencing even relatively mild gum related issues, such as light bleeding, to seek out a reputable periodontist as soon as possible.
