Each year, more than 25 million IV lines are placed in hospital patients
across the United States. Experts say this intervention is used in at
least 44
of pediatric patients. For years, nurses have used products
similar to an elbow brace to keep the line covered to prevent tinkering
or accidental bumping. Two nurses and a clinical safety manager at CHOP
knew there had to be a better way, so they partnered with the hospital's
Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (OEI) and began to develop an
innovative solution, the SeeIV.

From Concept to Commercialization

Medline and CHOP already had a history of collaboration so it was a
natural fit for their teams to work together to develop and scale this
solution. The SeeIV is the latest example of how the company
collaborates with and listens to clinicians as an innovation

"This is a great example of how collaboration in healthcare can make a
lasting impact on the field at large," says Teri Burke, senior product
manager for patient apparel innovation, Medline. "The CHOP team could
not have been more passionate and determined to create the best possible
solution for young patients."

Booth Highlights

On Oct. 12 at 12:15 p.m. CDT, the CHOP team will lead a presentation at
booth #1547 about what sparked the SeeIV and how other clinicians can
take problem solving to the next level. In addition, Medline will focus
on solutions to care for the caregiver and standardized practice through
design to care for patients throughout the conference. An innovation
immersion lab will also allow clinicians to give hands-on clinical
feedback on some of the company's newest products currently under

CHOP and Medline are now developing a pilot to better understand how the
SeeIV can help improve delivery of care among clinicians, patients and
families. To learn more about how the SeeIV became reality through nurse
innovation and is designed to drive patient and clinician impact, check
