Baker Donelson Partners with Fastcase on AI Sandbox

Partnership Creates Unique Insights Combining Legal Data, IBM Watson Tools

WASHINGTON, DC (PRWEB) July 13, 2017

Today Baker Donelson announced that it would be the first law firm to partner with legal publisher Fastcase on its Artificial Intelligence Sandbox platform. The first-of-its kind platform creates a secure environment in which law firms and corporate counsel can use artificial intelligence to crunch their own data, compare it with public legal data or metadata from Fastcase, and analyze it using cognitive intelligence tools such as IBM Watson Analytics and Watson Developer Cloud.

"In the next decade, firms and companies will differentiate themselves by the insights and efficiencies they create with data," said Fastcase CEO Ed Walters. "Firms that use artificial intelligence – that really roll up their sleeves and get their hands in the mix, not just subscribing to services that use it – those firms will separate themselves from the pack. It will make legal services the differentiator of the 2020s," he added. "This isn't read-only AI – it's read-write AI for America's best legal departments."

The secure platform allows firms to upload information such as client-matter billing data, firm work product such as briefs and memoranda, or structured metadata from anywhere in a legal department. Subscribers can add to the Sandbox Fastcase's leading collection of judicial opinions, statutes, or regulations, or structured metadata such as citation relationships or docket metadata. Legal departments in the Sandbox will be able to create their own cognitive search and content analytics engines running over their own KM system, Fastcase's public law databases, or both. Users also can create powerful data conversion or OCR engines for insight into scanned or PDF data.

"The kinds of insights we can create here are very powerful," said Meredith Williams Range, Baker Donelson's Chief Knowledge Management Officer. "We can see how much more efficiently Baker Donelson lawyers handle matters compared to other firms, understand how judges rule in cases like ours, understand the seasonality of litigation for firm clients, or instantly decide what firm documents are most important in handling a new matter," she added. "The combination of our firm's investment in structuring our data, with Fastcase's legal data and platform, and the power of IBM Watson have the potential to answer questions that no other firm can."

Fastcase will continue to add more public legal data, as well as access to new AI tools, to the Sandbox product. In its initial release, the AI sandbox will contain options for IBM Watson Analytics and Developer Cloud, expert system platform Neota Logic, ContraxSuite, a machine learning tool for contract and document analytics from LexPredict, and other tools.

"Understanding data like a lawyer is one of the most important emerging legal skills. Firms and legal departments that have invested in their data operations will gain insights from the AI Sandbox," Walters said. "But even firms without sophisticated data operations will be able to use our machine learning tools to give structure to their information, or to extract data and insights from it. What's most exciting is that legal departments in a Sandbox environment can create insights that we can't even imagine yet. We're creating the future right here."
