Presenters discuss the challenges of achieving compliance with established cleaning protocols and how Indigo-Clean can be part of a successful strategy.

Boston, Mass. and Kenosha, Wis. (PRWEB) April 26, 2017

Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI) prevention techniques continued to direct many of the conversations at this year's Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Conference on April 3-4; in particular, discussions focused on the challenge of achieving compliance with established cleaning protocols. To better understand how this challenge can be addressed, the Indigo-Clean Continuous Environmental Disinfection booth hosted three speakers who each presented different 30-minute sessions. The presentations addressed ways to reduce surgical site infections and the role of contaminated air in SSIs; the evidential support and clinical implementation of visible light disinfection, a new technology, to continuously reduce bacteria in the environment as part of an overall strategy to reduce SSIs; and finally, to discuss Indigo-Clean® technology and how it can be used throughout facilities to automatically and continuously reduce bacteria in the environment.

Lynnelle Murrell, Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, Tennessee, presented a case study focused on the hospital's use of Indigo-Clean Continuous Environmental Disinfection Technology. The hospital achieved an outstanding 88 percent reduction of bacteria in a busy OR during a 30-day trial and, based on those results and other clinical data, made the decision to install Indigo-Clean fixtures by Kenall in all of the hospital's operating rooms. "The Indigo-Clean lights provide another means of protection for our patients by reducing bacteria in the environment," said Murrell. "Patient safety is our number one concern and Indigo-Clean is one more tool to help us with our mission of zero hospital acquired infections," she concluded.

Maureen Spencer, R.N., M.Ed., CIC, Director of Clinical Implementation at Accelerate Diagnostics, presented "Establishing a Culture of Safety: The 7 S Bundle to Preventing Surgical Site Infections." "Ms. Spencer is a leading expert on the subject of surgical site infections with numerous publications to her credit. She presented evidence, gathered from more than 25 years of studies, which documented the role of contaminated air in surgical site infections and provided a clinical view of many of the new technologies available to help provide a cleaner environment, including Indigo-Clean.

Cliff Yahnke, PhD, Director of Clinical Affairs for Indigo-Clean, discussed the "Science Behind Continuous Environmental Disinfection in the Operating Room", which included the mode of action, data from clinical trials, and the differences between Indigo-Clean and UV disinfection devices. "Unlike UV technology, Indigo-Clean uses visible light to continuously and safely kill harmful bacteria 24/7, in the air and on hard and soft surfaces, requires no room downtime, creating a safer environment for patients and staff whenever the lights are on," said Yahnke during his presentation.

This schedule was repeated on both days of the Expo portion of the Conference, and was met with a great deal of enthusiasm from attendees. Yahnke commented that "Attendees are hungry for information regarding how to achieve the goal of zero HAIs and our guest speakers had great stories to tell about how Indigo-Clean can become an important part of that protocol." New guest speakers will be similarly featured at the upcoming Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) Conference June 14-16 in Portland, Oregon.
