Sujata Tibrewala, in Her New Exhibit Celebrating the Spirit of Holi, Showcases How Understanding the Beauty in Colors Can Change Lives

Artist Sujata Tibrewala's exhibition, marking the Hindu festival of Holi, hopes to bring back the healing power of colors in contemporary lives that seem to be getting divided over ‘colors' of skin.

The spring festival of Holi that is celebrated not just in India, but across the world, is a beautiful reminder of how contrasting colors bring joy to human lives. Artist Sujata Tibrewala, who grew up in India, has vivid memories of the festival of Holi. The vibrant festival brings people together and encourages them to forget all differences and celebrate by coloring each other. The artist does not view Holi just as a day of harmless abandon, but views it as a symbolic celebration where colors have the power not just to regale but also to unite communities.

Coming from the vibrant city of Jaipur in India, known for its bright colors that are seen everywhere from the flora and fauna to the historic buildings in the city, colors almost subconsciously formed a recurring theme in her art.

Today as Ms Tibrewala has made California, in America her new home, she feels happy that the spirit of seeing colors and deriving happiness from it has continued with her. In her new exhibit she takes Holi as a theme to pay her ode to colors of California, a place so teeming with cultures and communities that it is difficult to separate or sieve the differences. In fact what she sees is an artistic pattern where various colors come together to give a unifying pattern to this little haven of multiculturalism in America.

Ms Tibrewala feels proud that her childhood festival of Holi is today widely known and acknowledged by friends across cultures that she has made. She feels empowered to celebrate the colors that unite with not just people from her country, but people from across the globe.

As Holi announces the spirit of spring, the artist also wants everyone around to notice the colors in flowers, trees, the landscape, the skies and the water. She wants to appreciate the colors of universe that lend it its uniqueness. Her displayed works at the exhibit titled Color Talk and Color Dance, powerfully display the meditative power of colors in the universe.

The paintings are aimed to uplift the mood with the synchronic pattern of colors derived from the universe. In a power play of contrasts, the exhibit moves on to ask a pertinent question – if the varied colors in the nature give the mankind so much happiness how are then the differing colors of skin a subject of discord?

About the artist:
Sujata Tibrewala, a self-taught artist come engineer, remarkably embodies the indomitable spirit of human existence through her works. Her works revolve around the theme of eco-feminism. She has exhibited her artworks in some of the most reputed venues around the globe such as University of Illinois, Chicago, Raw San Jose, Parallax Art Fair London, the Regional Commission of Arts St Louis, Life Force Arts Chicago, Mindworks Gallery Chesterfield, St. Louis Artists' Guild, Chesterfield Arts, Art World Association, Women's Caucus for the Arts, MySLART and Lalit Kala Academy, Delhi.

She shifted to the USA in 2010 from India and practices her craft and conducts art workshops at Bay Area, CA, where she resides presently.
