Rima Nasser and Kimberly Coombs, of TEW Design Studio, a full-service interior design firm, discuss being bold for change in light of International Women's Day.

Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) March 07, 2017

Rima Nasser and Kimberly Coombs, co-owners of TEW Design Studio, are raising awareness of International Women's Day on March 8. International Women's Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women, and this year's theme is #BeBoldForChange.

"International Women's Day means that we get to celebrate being women and reflect on our achievements over the years. It is an inspirational reminder that there are many more challenges left to overcome," said Kimberly.

TEW Design Studio is a female minority-owned small business, to which both women credit their continued growth and success. "Being women from different ethnicities, our backgrounds drive us to work hard and achieve our goals. We set the bar high and celebrate every accomplishment, whether big or small, to stay motivated," noted Rima. "Our designs have always been shaped by the culture and diversity of how we grew up, and the different places we've lived around the globe."

As owners of TEW Design Studio, Rima and Kimberly face challenges every day due to the longstanding stereotype from the predominantly male construction industry that interior design is "just a hobby for bored housewives." "It's an uphill battle on a daily basis, but the better we are able to communicate that we understand the project's needs, we are quickly taken more seriously," added Kimberly.

Rima was once actually told by a general contractor that women make better kitchen designers because they spend more time in the kitchen than men. "This can be very exhausting and discouraging," said Rima, "but just like many other women around the nation today, our role is to educate and change the rhetoric about what we do, and how our industry is essential to the building trade. International Women's Day is a reminder that we are not alone in fighting gender equality -- one of the many causes we're passionate about as people and as a company."

Kimberly recently spent a semester teaching Residential Design at Wake Technical Community College, which was a fulfilling experience mentoring up-and-coming designers. "Rima and I have always looked at ways to give back and be an uplifting presence in our community," concluded Kimberly. "Being able to show a new crop of all-female students how our industry has grown, and the possibility for future careers, was exciting and rewarding."

Social issues are of the utmost important to TEW, and helps Kimberly and Rima create a platform to give a voice to those without one, and a helping hand to those in need. The Welcome Home Project is another community event that TEW recently joined and that Rima is heading alongside a client-turned-friend, where they are working on securing furniture and household items and setting up the items in a new home for a newly arriving refugee family through the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants in Raleigh.
