FastCAP's EPA approval for carbon nanotube production enables technological advances in multiple applications.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) October 18, 2016

FastCAP Systems has received approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the production and distribution of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotubes (VA-CNTs). The application was submitted under the Low Release and Low Exposure Exemption, and was approved in September 2016. FastCAP's multiwall, doublewall, and singlewall Carbon Nanotubes are available for purchase in a variety of shapes and sizes.

"This EPA approval is an inflection point for FastCAP because our ability to manufacture extra-long nanotubes enables a broad and exciting class of solutions based on composite materials," said John Cooley, President of FastCAP Systems. "Based on customer interest and internal tests, we are now actively seeking partners who wish to design this technology into their products."

The applications span metallic composites for electrical cables with lower cost and weight compared to copper and aluminum, plastic composites with special properties such as enhanced mechanical strength, electrostatic dissipation features, and enhanced thermal conductivity, and thermal pastes for improved heat dissipation in power systems. FastCAP produces VA-CNT arrays on a variety of substrates and with a variety of wall counts and lengths.

Applications for FastCAP's VA-CNTs include carbon dioxide capture, membranes, sensors, energy storage devices, conductive compounds, nanoscale mechanical systems, gas sensors, and electronics. As an example, FastCAP VA-CNTs can reversibly adsorb CO2 from a gas stream, and the material is easily regenerated by adjusting the charge of the material. This method has lower energy and lower maintenance requirements compared to existing technologies that rely on a large pressure or temperature swing for regeneration.

About FastCAP Systems:

FastCAP is an innovation driven company with a straightforward vision – to make a big impact in energy. In 2010, after six years of collaborative research at MIT by FastCAP's co-founders, FastCAP began work under a multi-million dollar grant from the DOE ARPA-E to develop its novel ultracapacitor technology for electrified drivetrain vehicles. FastCAP was honored to receive another grant in 2011 from the DOE Geothermal Technologies Program to develop a cutting edge power system for geothermal exploration. By the conclusion of its ARPA-E program in 2014, FastCAP had achieved five validated world performance records related to the power and energy density of its cells. FastCAP has gone on to achieve additional validated world records related to its high temperature ultracapacitor technology, including the highest operating temperature. These breakthrough performance characteristics have laid the foundation for FastCAP's unique product solutions in a wide variety of applications, from vehicles to energy and space exploration.
