Unemployment Down in 63 Percent of Metro Areas, New Report Says

Unemployment rates for the month of August were lower than the year previous in 242 out of 387 metropolitan areas, higher in 123 areas and unchanged in 22 areas, according the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment report released on Wednesday, September 28, 2016.
In August, a total of 190 areas had jobless rates below the national average of 5 percent, while 182 areas had rates above and 15 areas had rates equal to the national average. Sioux Falls, S.D. had the lowest unemployment at 2.1 percent, while Yuma, Arizona and El Centro, California, had the highest unemployment rates at 24.6 percent and 23.8 percent, respectively.
Last month, nonfarm payroll employment increased over the previous year in 320 metropolitan areas, decreased in 59 areas, and remained unchanged in 8 areas. The largest over-the-year increases in employment occurred in three populous areas: New York-Newark-Jersey, N.Y.-N.J.-Pa (up 184,200 jobs), Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (up 117,300 jobs), and Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, Calif. (up 112,900 jobs). Percentage-wise, St. George, Utah (7.1 percent), Madera, Calif. (7.0 percent), and Cleveland, Tenn. (6.4 percent) experienced the largest over-the-year gain in employment.
Conversely, the largest over-the-year losses in employment occurred in Lafayette, La. (lost 8,700 jobs), Davenport-Moline-Rock Island, Iowa-Ill. (lost 5,900 jobs), and Houma-Thibodaux, La. (lost 3,300 jobs). Percentage-wise, the same three areas also experienced the largest losses: Lafayette, La. (-4.1 percent), Houma-Thibodaux, La. (-3.4 percent), and Davenport-Moline-Rock Island, Iowa-Ill. (-3.2 percent).
