New Research Reveals DNA Mutations Underlying Mesothelioma, According to Surviving Mesothelioma

Scientists say Next Generation Sequencing may lead to better diagnostic tools and more targeted mesothelioma therapies.

Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) May 02, 2016

The Mayo Clinic has released new data on some of the specific genetic mutations that may give rise to many cases of pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma. Surviving Mesothelioma has just posted an article on the new research. Click here to read it now.

Researchers used NGS or "high-throughput" technology to screen for 236 cancer-related mutations in the genes of 11 mesothelioma patients.

"These findings will help in the development of new screening tools and targeting therapies, and in turn impact the standard-of-care and potentially lengthen disease control and survival periods in the future," writes lead author Dr. Gamze Ugurluer.

The study, published in Anticancer Research, revealed three gene "families" that were the most frequently mutated genes among the mesothelioma patients studied.

"Current cancer therapies have limited success in treating mesothelioma. Therapies that target specific genetic mutations have the potential to finally turn the tide of this deadly cancer," says Alex Strauss, Managing Editor of Surviving Mesothelioma.
