IT Industry Gains 8,100 Jobs in December

The IT industry gained 8,100 jobs for the month of December, according to the latest employment numbers released from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Friday, January 8, 2016.
According to the Economic Situation Report, the IT industry's job growth is down by 27.1 percent over November's gain of 10,300 jobs. IT job data is collected from multiple sectors, including the data processing, hosting and related services subsector, the computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector, the computer systems design and related services subsector, and the management and technical consulting services subsector.
Data processing, hosting and related services reported a decrease of 1,000 jobs last month, dropping from 298,800 in November. The subsector now sits at 297,800 jobs, a 3.9 percent increase over December 2014. This industry data includes computer programmers, computer support specialists, computer systems analysts, application developers, and systems software developers.
The computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector, which includes computer hardware engineers, computer software engineers (applications and systems software), electrical and electronic engineering technicians and equipment assemblers, and semiconductor processors gained 1,100 jobs last month. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has lost 1,700 jobs.
Computer systems design and related services, a part of the professional and business services sector gained 3,800 jobs in December. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has increased by 5 percent or 91,200 jobs. Management and technical consulting services grew by 4,200 jobs, a 0.32 percent increase over the month prior, and a 4.07 percent increase over December 2014.
Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 292,000 jobs in December, while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5 percent for the third month in a row. In 2015, employment growth totaled 2.7 million, compared to 3.1 million in 2014. Last month, job gains occurred in several industries, including professional and business services, construction health care, and food and drinking places. Mining employment continued to decline.
Total nonfarm payroll employment for October and November was revised from 298,000 to 307,000 jobs and 211,000 to 252,000 jobs, respectively. With these revisions, employment gains in October and November combined were 50,000 more than previously reported.
