NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Montauk, a beach resort located on the eastern end of Long Island, is the most expensive destination in the United States this summer. According to a recent survey conducted by TravelMag.com, it ranks costliest among all U.S. locales considered.

The survey pitted the destinations against each other based on the minimum price travelers will have to pay to stay in the cheapest available double room. The average price for such a room during the month of August served as the basis of comparison. It bears mentioning that only centrally located hotels and inns with an overall rating of at least 3 stars and with a positive average client evaluation have been considered by this survey.

With an average sticker price of $316 nightly for the least expensive double room, Montauk is on top of the rankings. Only a few dollars cheaper is Saratoga Springs, located close to Albany in upstate New York. This affluent city takes the second spot on the survey with an average rate of $312 per night this August.

Montauk's neighboring towns are also listed on the survey. While East Hampton ranks fifth most expensive with an average overnight price tag of $257 for the most affordable double room,

Southampton lands in the sixteenth spot with an average nightly rate of $207.
