Columbia, SC personal injury lawyer Johnny Felder says traumatic brain injuries can result in significant expenses over the course of a lifetime.

Columbia, SC (PRWEB) April 29, 2015

South Carolina brain injury attorney Johnny Felder of McGowan, Hood and Felder, LLC said today a new study finding that a head injury may cause the brain to age prematurely illustrates the devastating nature of such injuries.

Felder commented on an April 1 article in HealthDay ("Head Injuries May Prematurely Age the Brain, Study Suggests").

"At McGowan, Hood and Felder, we have represented victims of catastrophic injuries, including brain injuries from truck accidents and other events," Felder said. "As this report states, a traumatic brain injury can lead to persistent neurological problems, including premature aging of the brain. If you're in an accident and sustain a head injury, you may understand there are short-term consequences. You may need immediate medical treatment. You may need to take time off from work to recover. But this study serves as a reminder that victims and families need to consider the long-term impact. An injury may contribute to some form of early dementia and perhaps a shortened life span, as the study suggests."

Felder said experienced personal injury attorneys may use studies such as the one detailed by HealthDay when negotiating with insurance companies for compensation.

"We find that many brain injuries are often permanent and almost always life-changing," Felder said. "The seriousness of these types of injuries, however, may not be clear to victims. Often, victims who suffer a head injury might think they have a minor injury. They might have a headache or dizziness at first, but otherwise might feel normal. But a delay in getting treatment may be extremely harmful or even fatal. It's important to get immediate medical attention if you suspect a head injury."

According to HealthDay, the new brain injury study appears in the April issue of the Annals of Neurology. The study consisted of researchers scanning the brains of 99 people and comparing the scans with those of healthy people. According to researchers, the brains of head injury victims showed changes in structure that resembled those of older people. Using estimates from a computer model, researchers found the brains of the head injury victims appeared to be about five years older than their actual age.

According to brainline.org, the cost of a traumatic brain injury can run from $600,000 to nearly $2 million over a lifetime, depending on the victim's age and other factors. Attorney Felder said experienced attorneys can help evaluate the claim and determine a fair number for a settlement.

"Cases involving brain injuries are among the most complex types of cases we handle," Felder said. "We understand how a head injury in a car crash or from some other type of accident can have a profound emotional, physical and financial impact. By retaining experts and using our knowledge of the law and vast experience handing serious cases, we are able to take an aggressive approach with these cases. We strive to hold the responsible individual accountable and send a message that the negligent action that caused the injury will not be tolerated in South Carolina. Anyone who is injured should seek the advice of an experienced attorney who can help seek compensation and closure."
