Reversing a Trend, Ohio Major-Metro Construction Activity Increases 24.1% in Year-Over-Year Analysis, BidClerk Data Finds

For major-metro regions in Ohio, including Akron, OH; Cincinnati-Middletown, OH-KY-IN; Cleveland-Elyria-Mentor, OH; Columbus, OH; Dayton, OH; Toledo, OH; and Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA, the BidClerk Construction Index™ (BCI) 2nd quarter 2013 report showed positive results for construction projects that were actively bidding. Overall, construction activity increased 24.1% compared to one year ago. Private construction activity increased 2.4% and public construction activity increased 31.0%.

For all construction projects that were actively bidding, BCI's quarter-over-quarter analysis of the major-metro regions in Ohio showed an increase of 25.9% for the 2nd quarter of 2013 compared to an increase of 58.9% reported last quarter. Second quarter 2013 private construction projects increased 6.3%. BCI's quarter-over-quarter analysis also showed that public construction projects increased 31.9% compared to the 1st quarter of 2012. The total value of all major-metro Ohio projects reported on BidClerk that bid in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was $2,399,221,840.

In BCI's year-over-year analysis, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding in the Cleveland region increased 6.8% compared to a decrease of (-16.5%) reported in the 1st quarter of 2013. BCI's quarter-over-quarter analysis showed an increase of 26.7% compared to an increase of 62.3% for overall construction activity in the Cleveland region reported last quarter. The total value of all Cleveland projects reported on BidClerk that bid in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was $328,660,529.

In a year-over-year analysis for the Cincinnati region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 38.7% compared to one year ago, as reported by the BCI. BCI's quarter-over-quarter analysis revealed that combined private and public construction projects in the Cincinnati region increased 27.1%. The total value of all Cincinnati projects reported on BidClerk that bid in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was $764,512,346.

In a year-over-year analysis for the Columbus region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding climbed 32.1% compared to one year ago. BCI's quarter-over-quarter analysis revealed that combined private and public construction projects that were actively bidding in the Columbus region increased 25.4%. The total value of all Columbus projects reported on BidClerk that bid in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was $683,681,263.

Among the high-profile projects that BidClerk reported on for the 2nd quarter of 2013 was Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Central Ohio Medical Campus, in Athens, OH. (2319216 BidClerk ID.) The 65,000 sq. ft. project includes the construction of three buildings on a medical campus as well as landscaping and site work. Construction began in June 2013. The architect for the project is BHDP Architecture. The contract for general contracting was awarded to Pepper Construction (Dublin, OH). The project value is $8,450,761.
