20-ton blocks of snow are turned into works of art in Breckenridge, Colorado. Plan now to attend during January 15 - 18.

Breckenridge, Colorado (PRWEB) January 05, 2013

It's a dog. No, it's a plane. It's a house with a thingy sticking out of the roof. Whatever you think you see is fine with the fabulous sculptors preparing to compete in this year's 2013 Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge, Colorado, held January 15 – 18 in the Riverwalk Parking lot.

20-ton blocks of snow are turned into works of art right before your eyes. Shaved, pounded, and carved, each snow sculpting team toils throughout the night and day to create magnificent, awe-inspiring 3-D monoliths. When light is added, the pieces take on a luminescent feeling. 15 teams compete without using power tools, or colored dyes. Often the designs are conceived and developed on paper first during the summer prior to the event. Considerations must be made to not incorporate too many fragile elements, but still convey the message of the original design.

The event is Breckenridge's 23rd year and is entitled, The Budweiser Select International Snow Sculpture Championship. That's because teams from all over the planet fly to Colorado in an attempt to win the coveted distinction of being the best. There are two awards: The Artist's and People's Choice awards and last year's winners were team Canada Quebec and Germany.

“We decided to extend a special lodging offer this year, because one of the owners competes in the snow sculpting competition and has for the last 23 years,” said David Garrett of Ski Country Resorts, located in Breckenridge, Colorado.

“If folks call soon, they can receive our special discount. If they stay 2 nights, we'll give them the third night for free. We recently got our in-house transportation shuttle vans and we'll take you wherever you wish while staying with Ski Country,” continued Garrett.
