New York personal injury lawyer David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, is questioning how an 84-year old man became pinned between floors by an elevator in Harlem. The man got trapped inside the apartment building elevator with his feet sticking out, reported NBC News.

The man was critically injured in the elevator accident that left him between the first and second floors, said NBC News. A neighbor said the elevator started going up before the doors fully closed.

“Elevators can be dangerous to older adults who often have mobility, vision or balance issues,” said Perecman. “Many of their elevator-related injuries are the result of a slip or a fall, or a result of the elevator door closing on them. Safety is critical, especially in a building that is home to many elderly and disabled individuals.”

The accident occurred in the New York City Housing Authority-run building on 105th Street. According to NBC News, building residents said the elevators, including the one that hurt the man, had a history of problems.

“The question now, is how did this happen? Did the elevator door close too quickly? Was the man trapped by a door in “nudging mode, when doors close at a reduced speed without regard for anything in their way? Were the sensors working correctly?” said Perecman.

According to WebMD, research shows that more than 2,600 older adults end up in the emergency room each year as a result of an elevator-related injury.

Elevator accidents require experienced lawyers with the knowledge and resources necessary to handle the complexities of this type of case,” said David Perecman, who has represented clients injured in elevator accidents throughout New York who have been
