A cursory glance at the timeline history of the NFL's Single Season Rushing Yardage Record reveals not only that Adrian Peterson averaged 6 yards per carry only to arrive 8 yards short of Eric Dickerson's 1984 record of 2,105, but that he also did so on 31 fewer carries.
And while one of Peterson's most remarkable feats was playing the entire 16 game season on a knee that on on December 26, 2011 suffered a torn ACL and MCL. Peterson, who also holds the single game yards rushing record at 296, was receiving public accolades and speculation that he would be the comeback player of the year, started getting public build up for League MVP. He was a game time decision on the first game of the season, such was the condition of his knee.
One comparison to Peterson's mercurial statistical season and it's place in NFL history is LaDainian Tomlinson's 2006 season in which he had 1815 yards rushing for a 5.2 yards per carry average with 28 rushing touchdowns, 508 receiving yards with 3 receiving touchdowns. That's a respectable 2,323 all purpose yards.
