Start the New Year off right! Shows, concerts, museums and sports are all recommended by ChicagoTraveler.com when looking for something fun to do in Chicago, January 2013.
Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) January 04, 2013
January is a time for recovering from the holidays and trying to hold on to those New Years Resolutions as long as possible. But don't start the New Year off spending boring days and nights at home, because there are plenty of things to do in Chicago this January not to be missed. Start 2013 off with winter activities, a night at the theater or cheering along at an unforgettable concert or sports event. ChicagoTraveler.com suggests five things to do this January that won't be around the rest of the year.
Embrace the Winter Wonderland
It's still winter for a few more months, so just because the Christmas decorations are coming down and the Ball has already dropped doesn't mean that the ice skating, hot cocoa and snow are going anywhere fast. Winter Wonderfest at Navy Pier ends on January 6, but throughout the rest of Chicago, ice skating generally goes strong until March. The ice rink at Millennium Park is one of the top Chicago attractions right now, so enjoy it while it's still there. The rinks are a little less crowded than they were during the holidays, and are now the ideal location to perfect all those tricks (or fall in front of far fewer witnesses.)
See a Show
There are a few great shows in Chicago this season. Other Desert Cities opens on January 12 at the Goodman Theatre. The Book of Mormon is already playing at the Bank of America Theatre. It's actually playing until September, so don't feel the need to rush, but why spend the warm summer months inside? See it now while the days are chilly and the nights are longer. The Mother****** with the Hat is playing at the Steppenwolf Theatre, and for something a little more light-hearted, I Love Lucy, Live Onstage at the Broadway Playhouse is good for a few laughs. War Horse plays through January 5 at the Cadillac Palace, then on January 30 Peter Pan takes its place.
Head to the Museum
Save the sightseeing for a warm summer day and check out all the limited time (and permanent) exhibits in the best Chicago museums right now. Charlie Brown and the Great Exhibit will only be at the Museum of Science and Industry through February. Extreme Mammals will only be at the Field Museum through January 6th, so hurry before it's gone. The Explore the Jellies exhibit at the Shedd Aquarium has been extended through 2013 as well. Don't miss out on the Chicago museum coupons that can help fund the entertainment and education this winter.
Go to a Concert
Despite the low temperatures, the music scene is on fire this January. In addition to all of the local bands that play throughout the city regularly, there will be several concerts in Chicago to attend. Led Zeppelin 2 is rocking the House of Blues on January 12th. Grace Potter & the Nocturnals are heading to Chi-Town on January 18th. The Take Action Tour: The Used will be in Chicago on January 23rd. Flogging Molly will be at the Aragon Ballroom on January 26th, tiding over the St. Patrick's Day spirit until the next big holiday gets here in two months. Be sure to get Chicago concert tickets online - don't miss out.
Head to United Center for a Bulls Game
The Bears are out, but we've still got plenty of Chicago teams to cheer on in 2013. The Chicago Bulls have home games in United Center throughout January, and the tickets are well priced this month. Some of the games to especially looks forward to might be the Memphis Grizzlies, LA Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. Also happening at the United Center this month is the UFC on Fox. Johnson vs Dodson for the World Flyweight Championship. Speaking of bulls though, PBR (Professional Bull Riders) are also putting on a show at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont this January 12th and 13th. Find all the upcoming times and Chicago sports tickets so that not a single bull goes unnoticed this January.
The holidays are over, but winter is still in full force in the Windy City, and there are still plenty of fun things to do in Chicago for both locals and travelers to enjoy.
