On January, 3, 2012, a representative of collection agency Rapid Recovery Solution comments on an article published on Examiner.com regarding the increase in debt collection scams around the holidays.
According to the article, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has warned Americans to not fall victim to telephone inquiries from people identifying themselves as debt collectors. Con-artists are trying to take advantage of holiday borrowers who do not have “accurate records and documentation.”
The article notes that there are several fake debt collection agencies making the rounds this holiday season and into the New Year. These collectors “speak English with a foreign accent” and they do not offer any information about themselves while trying to collect money from unsuspecting debtors. These fake collectors are working from various places, and authorities have been unsuccessful in tracking them thus far.
“It's really important that people keep track of which institutions they have borrowed from,” says John Monderine, CEO of collection agency Rapid Recovery Solutions. “If you have your budget in order, then you are less likely to fall victim to a sham debt collector because you have proof of what you owe. You aren't as vulnerable.” Monderine continues, “If you're getting calls at work or if the person does not identify themselves as a debt collector, but an officer or lawyer, then you can presume that you are the target of a scam.”
