MomoCon, the annual anime and gaming fan convention that takes place in Atlanta every March, is starting the new year off right, with the MomoCon Winter Ball. People are encouraged but not required to wear semi-formal costumes from anime and video games when it takes place January 5th at the Georgia Tech Student Center.

Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) December 31, 2012

MomoCon is fast becoming one of the most popular fan conventions in the country. MomoCon is both an Anime Convention and a Gaming Convention but also brings together fans of American animation from all across the country. A great part of the popularity of the MomoCon brand is year round events starting off the the MomoCon Winter Ball, followed by the 10,000 person event on March 8th - 10th 2013 with more events planned in July, October, and December. MomoCon is a popular Atlanta destination for fans that began on the Georgia Tech campus as a two-day event in 2005. While MomoCon is no longer held on campus, instead being held at the Hilton Atlanta, to pay homage to its roots MomoCon will be hosting the Winter Ball on the Georgia Tech Campus on January 5, 2013.

MomoCon is known internationally as one of the fastest growing family friendly conventions in the world. Jess Merriman, Internal Chairman and founder of MomoCon, explains that the event grew from a small gathering to "an anime, cartoon and gaming convention, with great celebrity and industry guests, events for everyone in the family, performances, live music, demonstrations, screenings and movies, elaborate costumes, and great festival fun."

MomoCon's roots are in Japanese culture, and it is known worldwide as a festival of anime, costuming, and gaming. Costuming enthusiasts enjoy “Cosplay,” that embraces costume creation and wearing a costume to act and pose as a character from one's favorite game or show. While costuming is encouraged, there is no need to dress in a costume for The MomoCon Winter Ball. “The dress code is semi-formal or formal attire of any culture, so suits and dresses are appropriate,” explained MomoCon's other Co-founder Chris Stuckey. “We are asking that there be no blue jeans, non-formal cosplay, or in appropriate foot wear.” Kimonos, for instance, should be worn in an appropriate manner, as the Japanese would, and not as robes.

Dancing and entertainment will go from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM at the Georgia Tech Student Center Ballroom. This is a wonderful chance for young people who enjoy costuming to mingle in a safe and supervised environment with their peers. “This is the eighth ball that MomoCon has hosted, with the first one being January, 2009.” Explained Chris Stuckey, “Each one has been more successful than that last, and we are expecting 2013's Winter Ball to be the best ever.” There is no alcohol permitted at the MomoCon Winter Ball.

According to Jess Merriman, “These events allow the fans of cartoons and gaming a chance to meetup regularly, show off great outfits, and be a part of a community, at a nominal cost of $ 10.00.” MomoCon has asked that all costumers leave large props at home, as this is a public event.

Looking forward to MomoCon 2013, the convention will be expanding its family-friendly profile as well as continuing to grow its emphasis on gaming. While the traditional Anime focus will remain as favorite for MomoCon's core constituency, MomoCon will be increasing programming dedicated to American Animation . Featured guests include animation writer, producer, and legend Mike Reiss (Simpsons, The Critic), animation voice actor Steve Blum (Cowboy Bebop, Avatar: Legend of Korra, Toonami), and popular gaming voice actors Jennifer Hale (Mass Effect, Marvel vs Capcon, Multiple Star Wars Games) and Mark Meer (Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate). Local celebrities Amber Nash and Lucky Yates of FX's Archer will also be returning.
