Diedrich Diederichsen is the visiting critic in Fine Arts at Otis College of Art and Design this semester. Celebrated writer, journalist, and critic whose articles and texts have been published in "Texte zur Kunst", "Artforum", and "Frieze", he was editor-in-chief of the influential subculture magazine "Spex" until the 1990s. Diederichsen will explore the impact of the artist Mike Kelley and the post-Kelley world of class, culture, and rebellion.
“Twenty years ago I came for the first time to stay and teach in Los Angeles, introduced to it, among others, by Mike Kelley. I experienced a specific relation between sub and micro-cultures and art institutions that was different from what I knew in Europe and the U.S. East Coast. The traditional pessimistic attitude - institutions seen as the graveyard of subcultures - or the cynical position that we all will be outgrowing subcultural and self-organized forms of practice and have to make a living were countered here by specific ideas of the local and of institutions as territory to be defended. What is left of this impression today - in Los Angeles and in the world in times of cuts and privatizations - and after Mike Kelley?” - Diedrich Diederichsen
