Spelling is Still Important But Survey Shows a Lot of Struggling Spellers, Ultimate Spelling Software Reveals
Ultimate Spelling announced today how despite the perceived importance of spelling, many young adults are still struggling with frequently misspelled words.
New York City, NY (PRWEB) November 03, 2012
A recent survey done by British company ICM Research used an online spelling test to check the spelling skills of over 2,000 people, most of whom considered themselves good spellers. However, even though the participants had a good opinion of their skills, and agreed that spelling is a significant and important component of language, around 30% of the people taking the test couldn't correctly spell words such as “definitely,” “necessary” and “separate.”
Commenting on these results, Ultimate Spelling software creator Marc Slater noted, “It's not that we're not aware of how young people are slowly driven away from the correct use of language these days. Be it social media, Smartphones, or just technology in general, young people are no longer concerned about the form of the message, but rather the content. This is not entirely wrong, but it comes with a severe toll; poor spelling performance can have larger implications down the road, decreasing one's hiring potential.”
The ICM survey is only the latest evidence that our growing reliance on technological innovations and gadgets renders us complacent and less willing to rely on our own skills. We know technology will always be there to refer to when we need help with spelling, grammar, and information research, but it's a mistake to ignore the need for personal skill building in these areas. As Slater said, “Learning spelling is a critical part of education for young children and adults. In the end, we truly cannot rely on anything else but our spelling knowledge and skills. It's everyone's duty to enhance their language skills and become spelling self-sufficient. This can only be beneficial in both one's career and personal life.”
Spelling software is an effective and reliable method of improving spelling, in part because its interactivity and technology-based structure are always appealing to younger learners, which increases the time they spend using it. Slater encourages parents to look into spelling software, saying, “This software is something we need to consider when brainstorming about ways to appeal to younger audiences, if we really want our youth to be comprehensively literate when it comes to language.”
