On November 2, city bikes developer Linus Bike comments on an article published by the Aiken Standard which discusses how bicycling advocacy in Aiken, South Carolina was in full throttle after Georgia Bikes and Palmetto Cycling Coalitions, Wheel Movement and the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association shared the floor of the “Bicycle Friendly Across the Borders” conference to promote bicycling improvements. Linus Bike responds to the conference with support.
The “Bicycle Friendly Across the Borders” conference was held in both South Carolina and Georgia October 19th-21st reports Aiken Standard. According to the Aiken Standard, “The ‘Bicycle Friendly Across the Borders' conference is the first time any two U.S. states have come together in the name of bike advocacy.”
Alta Planning & Design, reports Aiken Standard, “will assign select routes as bike routes and integrate features such as bike facilities, bike lanes and shared paths.”
“It will create a network within Aiken that makes an integrated transportation network, so folks can get from their house to the store, things like that,” Executive Director of Palmetto Cycling Coalition Amy Johnson commented to Aiken Standard. “We were really, really excited,” Johnson said. “South Carolina has fewer advocacy organizations than Georgia … We've got strong local communities, that have real desire to make their towns and their cities bike-friendly.”
Linus Bike Sales Manager Jason Latty commented on the bicycle advocacy as “a forward thinking step in the right direction.” He goes on to state, “With Georgia and South Carolina's union, there is no telling which states will join the ranks of ‘Bicycle Friendly Across the Borders' in years to come.” In addition, Latty adds, “If bicycle advocacy was as easy as shaking hands between states, I think the roads of American highways would become safer overnight.”
