261 Patients from other institutions have already been transferred to or assisted by the region's largest Health System.
Great Neck, NY (PRWEB) November 01, 2012
The North Shore-LIJ Health System accepted 10 patients evacuated Wednesday afternoon from Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan, on top of the 94 that Lenox Hill and other North Shore-LIJ hospitals received on Tuesday from NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan and the 45 who were transported from Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn.
Throughout the Hurricane Sandy preparation and response, North Shore-LIJ facilities have accepted or transported of 261 patients from New York City and Long Island hospitals and nursing homes. The health system's Center for Emergency Medical Services has played a major role in that effort, responding to 1,008 requests for assistance before, during and after the hurricane, and transporting a total of 726 patients. Throughout the storm, there were no adverse incidents involving patients being cared for at North Shore-LIJ facilities.
All of North Shore-LIJ's 16 hospitals remained fully operational throughout the storm's duration and its aftermath. As of Wednesday evening, all North Shore-LIJ facilities were on full power with the exception of Staten Island University Hospital's South Division, which remained on back-up generators.
"Hurricane Sandy was the worst storm to hit our region since 1938," said North Shore LIJ President and CEO Michael J. Dowling. "An historic event of such magnitude requires an historic response. The ability of our employees and clinicians to keep our doors open, meet community needs during a crisis and assist other hospitals in distress was a significant achievement, and a testament to the partnership we have with emergency response agencies and other healthcare institutions in the region."
Family members and loved ones looking to check on the status of transferred patients can call the North Shore-LIJ's Hurricane Sandy Patient Information Hotline at 1-855-473-6399.
