The Lodge at Chaa Creek has announced the release of the last packages for the long awaited 2012 Maya Winter Solstice celebrations to be held in Belize.

Marketing administrator Larry Waight said that with only limited spaces left, and with the earlier releases having sold out quickly, Chaa Creek decided to open bookings for the “last few” all-inclusive packages today 1 November 2012.

“With major events like this we try to keep a few spaces open for last minute bookings, but now that we are in the final preparations we decided to go ahead and offer the last few spaces,” Mr Waight said. He added that Chaa Creek had spaced the releases over the course of the last year to ensure that a wide range of people would be participating in the celebrations, which are centred on the week surrounding the December 21 Winter Solstice.

“This is the most ambitious event we've hosted in the 30 years since Chaa Creek first opened its doors , so we wanted to make sure we had a diverse group of people attending, from families, couples, individuals and groups of friends, as well as those with a professional or academic interest, such as archaeologists and Mayanists.

“Looking at our guest list, I'm happy that we achieved that,” he said.

Mr Waight said that the deluxe, all-inclusive Belize vacation packages include “everything guests need to have the experience of a lifetime,” from luxurious accommodation, meals, access to a range of lectures, seminars and workshops, activities, tours of Maya temples and ancient cities and even comfortable Maya clothing and personalised, commemorative keepsakes of the 2012 Winter Solstice.

“It will be a huge week,” he said. “Living in Belize's Heartland of the Maya has made us sensitive to what an amazing civilisation the ancient Maya were, and we see the 2012 Winter Solstice as an opportunity to communicate this to the rest of the world. We carefully developed packages that would combine education with adventure and fun, so that our guests come away not only with a deeper understanding of Maya civilisation, but having had an incredible experience they'll remember all their lives,” he said.

Anticipation for the December 21 event has been building in popular imagination for the last few years, with the Hollywood blockbuster film “2012” and many articles, documentaries and internet posts giving conflicting and sometimes sensational versions of what to expect. Some people are anticipating a new awakening of human consciousness and outpouring of positive energy, while others predict that the completion of a major cycle of the Maya Long Count calendar, which occurs on December 21, will bring about the end of the world.

Mr Waight said the only thing that is certain is that the 2012 Winter Solstice has been a date of huge importance for the Maya for thousands of years. “It's no exaggeration to say that December 21 2012 has been looked forward to for thousands of years now. It was identified with amazing accuracy long before the birth of Christ by ancient Maya astronomers and rulers as being a very significant date, to say the least.

“It's unfortunate that some people chose to interpret the completion of a millennia-long cycle as being the end of the world, but you'll always have sensationalists,” Mr Waight said, “all we know for sure is that here, in the Maya heartland, it is going to be one amazing celebration,” he added.

Mr Waight said that the last few spaces for the Chaa Creek Belize 2012 Maya Winter Solstice packages can now be booked through the Chaa Creek website or contacting their head office or a local travel agent.

“The date is approaching quickly and the excitement is really building; not just at Chaa Creek but throughout the entire Mundo Maya, which comprises all of Belize and parts of Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador.

“It really is an once-in-a-lifetime experience that I'm personally looking forward to,” he said.
