Outdoor Sculptures To Transform Century City's Avenue of the Stars

Century City, Los Angeles' Westside urban and commercial center, will launch a uniquely large-scaled annual outdoor art exhibition along the center median of Avenue of the Stars beginning on November 15, 2012, transforming the Avenue of the Stars into a “must see” artistic and cultural destination in Los Angeles. The first outdoor exhibition, a series of 22 life-size bronze animal sculptures created by Los Angeles artist Gwynn Murrill, will be on display on the Avenue of the Stars between Pico Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard until October 2013. The animal subjects, including wild coyotes, tigers, deer, panthers, big horn sheep, horse and an eagle depicted in flight, will be installed on the famed street center median in a manner that fuses landscape, architecture and art into an environmental experience.

Developed by the Century City Chamber of Commerce Arts Council's Sculpture Committee, Murrill's exhibit is the first in an ongoing outdoor sculpture art project along Avenue of the Stars in Century City. Murrill's exhibit features bronze sculptures that she has created over the past twenty years positioned throughout landscape designed, installed, and maintained by ValleyCrest Landscape Companies.

“It is easy to think of Century City as only a business center with skyscrapers,” said Carl Schlosberg, chair of the sculpture committee and curator and sponsor of the exhibition. “But it is truly a center of arts and culture in Los Angeles. Our vision is to celebrate the human side of Century City by integrating Gwynn's masterful sculptures in a setting that complements and accentuates the surrounding landscape and architecture. An outdoor exhibit of this scale will make a long-term impact on Century City's place in the Los Angeles arts and culture narrative.”

“Century City is the cosmopolitan heart of Los Angeles,” said Century City Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, Susan Bursk. “There is no better place in the city for art to both complement and humanize the urban landscape. Gwynn's sculptures will demonstrate a powerful juxtaposition between the natural world and the surrounding urban environment. It is the perfect way to launch Century City's outdoor sculpture program.”

“Gwynn is drawn to animal forms because of their complex beauty,” said the artist's representative and director of L.A. Louver gallery, Kimberly Davis. “Her sculptural forms are not completely represented by external form but by essence as well. She has an uncanny ability to pair each animal to its essential characteristic and to project the spirit of each animal and so these extraordinary works, in an unassuming way, take on a life of their own.”

“Creating a landscape environment for Gwynn Murrill's sculptures was an exciting and fulfilling process,” said ValleyCrest Landscape Maintenance South Los Angeles Vice President and Regional Manager Brian Helgoe. “We take pride in transforming landscapes into enriching, one-of-a-kind environments and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in such a beautiful fusion of landscape and art.”

Gwynn Murrill's outdoor exhibit and installation was made possible with the support of the contemporary art gallery, L.A. Louver, landscape pioneer ValleyCrest Landscape Companies, Carl Schlosberg Fine Arts, the Century City Foundation and Gainsborough Capital, and in partnership with the Century City Chamber of Commerce, Century City Chamber of Commerce Arts Council, and the Century City BID Association.
