MormonVoices Applauds Graham's Removal of Mormons from Cult List

Others Encouraged to Follow Suit, Engage in More Productive Theological Discussions

Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) October 31, 2012

MormonVoices applauds the recent news that Billy Graham's ministry has removed "Mormons" from its list of "cults," said an executive director of the organization.

For decades, some conservative Protestant groups have aggressively labeled The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose members are also called "Mormons," as a "cult." This designation is false and hurtful to Mormons, but that hasn't stopped it from entering public discourse, said Scott Gordon, MormonVoices Managing Director.

Recently, the official website of Billy Graham's ministry, one of the most prominent and admired Protestant organizations, removed "Mormons" from its list of "cults." This change was greeted with appreciation by many Mormons, including MormonVoices, Gordon said.

"It's really a wonderful step forward," said Gordon. "The word, 'cult' has often been used as an epithet to avoid serious discourse. Someone who has heard that Mormons are a cult is less likely to understand what Mormons actually believe, and may unfairly judge a Mormon they interact with at work, or at another venue.”

"We're grateful to Billy and Franklin Graham, and encourage other ministries to follow suit. Mormons and Protestants can maintain a respectful awareness of our theological differences without resorting to un-Christian name calling," continued Gordon.

The Graham website still lists other groups, such as Jehovah's Witnesses, as cults, and MormonVoices urges Graham and others to reconsider those designations as well, Gordon added. "One of the purposes of MormonVoices is to stand up for all faiths, not just Mormonism. We know that harmfully controlling groups exist, but calling a group a 'cult' generally doesn't contribute to genuine understanding of others' beliefs. We hope that people of goodwill can learn to make their cases for or against certain beliefs in a respectful and informative manner."

MormonVoices is sympathetic to, but not directly affiliated with, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
