Success For The Baines & Ernst Apprenticeship Scheme

Baines & Ernst recently launched their apprenticeship scheme in association with Stockport College. Here we talk to one of their new recruits to find out how they're settling into their role and how they're finding life in employment.

Last month Baines & Ernst – a leading financial solutions company based in Manchester – launched their new apprenticeship scheme in association with Stockport College.

Originally, the company had shortlisted 10 students for two posts, but were so impressed by the calibre of students, they extended to 3 posts – two within Customer Services and one in IT.

Ella Snape, Group HR and Training Manager at Baines and Ernst said, “Youth unemployment is at an all time high right now – making it increasingly harder for young people to get valuable experience within the workplace.

“It's vital that young people are given the chance to build confidence within a professional environment and gain valuable skills that will help them to build a CV employers will be interested in reading in the future. We felt that working with Stockport College was a perfect opportunity to give young people the break they need and a chance to get onto the career ladder.”

Here, one of their new recruits – Lewis Curbishley – talks about what it's like to be the new IT Apprentice...

“Before getting this apprenticeship, the job market was harsh; the only jobs going were sales jobs. I had worked in some call centres, but it wasn't what I wanted to do, so it would never work out. I wanted to do a job I'd really enjoy so that I could build a career for myself.

“I've always been pretty enthusiastic about technology – it's one of the subjects that's always interested me and I've always wanted to learn more. To me, it felt natural to pursue a career in IT – my only problem was getting experience. I've been trying to get into IT since I left school, but employers wanted people with the right qualifications and didn't seem to have the time to offer training or give someone the chance to get hands-on experience.”

When asked if the apprenticeship has helped him to gain valuable experience, Lewis said “Absolutely! I'm learning new skills every day and I'm getting great experience working for a really busy company. As well as helping with day-to-day operations, I'm also resolving IT issues all the time. It's a great learning curve.”

Ella Snape adds, “Lewis has been a great addition to the IT team – he's hardworking and is doing a great job. We've been really pleased with all of our new apprentices, and we hope to continue to work with Stockport College and give other talented young people the chance to develop their careers.”

It certainly looks like Lewis is on the road to building a career in a role he's passionate about, but the UK needs more schemes like this to build a strong economy long after the recession is behind us.
