The Australian Government has approved the expansion of the coal export terminal operations at Abbot Point, near Bowen in Queensland. The area is known for its extremes of climate and challenging environment, and the Diamond Protectives Coating Services team believes that local businesses are well-equipped to ensure that all such facilities have the correct corrosion control measures in place.

“The Alpha Coal Port Project brings the number of coal export terminals at Abbot Point to three” said Dennis Eagers from Diamond Protective Coatings Services. “During the construction stage, it will bring 650 jobs into Whitsunday Area - and at every stage of construction, protective coatings and corrosion control will be necessary.”

“We have a very harsh climate in this part of Australia, and there is little doubt companies that are familiar with how wind and sea, tropical downpours and fierce sun can cause problems in industrial situations, are best placed to provide preventative and maintenance services” continued Mr Eagers.

The need for the infrastructure project, a GVK /Hancock Coal initiative, is a result of anticipated expansion of coal mining operations in Queensland's Galilee Basin and the continuing high demand for coal exports.

According to Whitsunday Regional Mayor Jennifer Whitney, once commissioned, the facility will provide 250 permanent jobs.

“Ours is just one of the businesses that has been able to grow out of Queensland's natural resources boom” said Mr Eagers. “These projects are bringing people, jobs and business to our region, and local companies and tradespeople who recognise the opportunities that arise as a result, are doing very well.”
