With inviting game centers, tasty delights, a giant, indoor Ferris wheel, and a beautiful walk-through aquarium, the new Scheels megastore in Sandy, Utah, is much more than just a place to buy sporting goods. Along with these fabulous attractions, Scheels also offers its visitors a fun photo activity called Augmented Reality, in which visitors take pictures to share with their friends, using an installed iPad device secured in an ArmorActive iPad kiosk solution.
Scheels' iPad-run Augmented Reality photo experience begins with an ArmorActive iPad kiosk mount and stand to secure and station the iPad. The user then stands in front of the iPad with a mini green screen in their hands. Scheels' augmented reality app replaces the green screen with a 3D image chosen by the user from a list of options--a fish, a shark, or something else altogether. After taking the picture they can send the picture to their email or share it with their friends. After only a few weeks of using the augmented reality kiosk in their store, Scheels reports that 250-400 emails are being sent per day from the ArmorActive kiosk by their customers. Scheels is reaping the benefits of social activity and user-generated marketing, thanks to the ArmorActive iPad kiosk and the Augmented Reality experience.
“This new photo experience is very popular with Scheels' customers and a smart marketing strategy overall,” says Nick Ames, CMO of ArmorActive. “At any time, there are groups waiting to take their turn with the application. Users love playing with the iPad and sending the pictures to their friends, spreading the Scheels brand and advertising their customer experience.”
The iPad itself is secured with ArmorActive's Evolve enclosure (including custom branded faceplate) and stationed on ArmorActive's Sentinel iPad kiosk stand. Power backup solutions were also implemented into the stand to ensure the iPad will run throughout all business hours.
“The iPad offers all kinds of new and creative ways to engage customers,” Ames adds. “The future of customer interaction and in-person marketing is in secure tablet technology and innovative applications like Sheel's Augmented Reality experience.”
