Saint Mary's University of Minnesota is proud to mark its centennial anniversary this year. As the university takes the opportunity to appreciate the institution's long and varied history, it also continues to reinvent itself for the future with online programs that integrate today's technology—most recently, an innovative program that harnesses the power of the iPad to enhance the online learning experience.
The university was founded in 1912 by Bishop Patrick R. Heffron as a local college for men. In the 1930s Saint Mary's College was formally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, offering coursework in traditional liberal arts and sciences as well as career-related studies. Saint Mary's became coeducational in 1969, one of the signs of a period of great change for the institution. Graduate programs were added in the 1970s, while an increasingly diverse student population resulted in evening and weekend classes being offered to accommodate the schedule of full-time workers in the 1980s. In the 2000s, online programs were added to provide even more convenient and flexible options for working adults, as well as to expand the university's reach beyond its geographical limits.
Today, students enrolled in online programs at Saint Mary's receive an iPad loaded with productivity apps and a mobile learning platform for a completely portable and interactive learning experience. This powerful learning tool allows students not only to study on the go, but to collaborate with classmates in real time with Skype, Adobe Connect and Facetime directly from Saint Mary's app; post videos, podcasts and dictation to discussion boards; video conference with their instructors and much, much more.
In honor of the centennial, the university received a congratulatory letter from Minnesota's delegation to the United States Congress that specifically lauded the institution for its ability to adjust to the changing needs of society as well as its students. “The university is an innovator among private colleges in embracing the expansion of quality, flexible graduate and professional programs as a way to meet our economy's need for an ever more sophisticated and well-prepared workforce,” it states. “The 2012 Minnesota Congressional Delegation can all agree that with a solid foundation and commitment to education, Saint Mary's University will continue to amaze us during its second century.” It is signed by ten members of Congress, including U.S. Senators Al Franken and Amy Kobluchar.
