Fairfax, Va. October 27, 2012 Norris Building Group's roofing division spent Saturday stocking up on roofing tarps and organizing roofing crews to prepare for Hurricane Sandy “We know what these storms are capable of and we want to be prepared.” stated Norris, President of NBG Restoration.
High winds and rains over multiple days give small leaks time to build up and cause real damage. It is not uncommon for a roofing leak to cause damage to the insulation in the attic and the drywall on the ceiling below. When the rain lasts for days the diagnosis is often worse.
NBG Restoration recommends homeowners prepare by performing these tasks now.
1. Clean your gutters. Cleaning your gutters can prevent water from backing up and entering your home from behind trim boards or under shingles
2. Trim dead branches and ones too close to your home- branches and other wind blown debris further complicates roof problems add additional dangers during the storm clean up
3. Visually inspect your roof for missing shingles- sometimes they are not that easy to spot, especially with today's color blended shingles.
4. Inspect attic for visible signs of water penetration- upon visual inspection from inside your attic sometimes it is possible to identify a small leak from a previous storm. Look up at the plywood decking and the 2x4 rafters for discolored wood. Matted insulation from water drips can also be a sign.
5. Inspect for cracks around roofing collars and look around skylights for any cracks. If so a temporary fix should be a roofing tar or caulking. Keep in mind this is temporary and a professional should be called to fix the problem for good.
