On October 29, kettlebells instructor Lorna Kleidman weighs in on the results of a recent weight loss study by Baruch College-University of New York which reports that group programs like Weight Watchers are clinically more effective.
According to online publication Voxxi, a study published in the Obesity Journal reported that, “weight loss programs like Weight Watchers, and similar ones where dieters lose weight with a group, can be more effective than clinical weight loss programs.” The article states that the study broke 141 overweight participants up into three groups, “one was in a Weight Watchers program, another group was placed in individual weight loss programs led by health care professionals and the third group was a combination of the two.”
After a 48 week period of positive results from all groups, “the study found that those enrolled in Weight Watchers lost an average of more than 13 pounds compared to those in the combined program with individuals losing an average of eight pounds. Individuals in the professional counseling program experienced an average weight loss of less than 12 pounds,” reports Voxxi.
Lorna Kleidman, the most decorated kettlebell athlete in the country, applauds the study for its effectiveness. “Losing weight is a goal for most people that have a high health risk. Working in groups gives those with health issues the encouragement needed to reach their goals and become champions in their own hearts,” comments Kleidman. “Eating right and exercising are major parts of weight loss but having group support can make all the difference.”
