Whether a toddler lovers their crib or is eager to jump out of it at the first chance, at some point, they will be ready to graduate to a big-kid bed. How can you make this move safely and smoothly?

The move from a crib to a toddler bed doesn't include an actual checklist but the move comes out of concern for the safety of the toddler. As a Basic rule, it is a combination of factors to consider when contemplating this move. First, most feel the average appropriate time (keep in mind this is just an average) might be between 18 months and 3 years of years. More important than age, however, is whether the toddler is showing signs of climbing out of the crib himself such as hanging over the side of the crib, sticking their toes over the railing and climbing on toys piled up to get out of the crib or just swinging a leg over and climbing out. Of course child safety is the key element, and if there is a concern that the child could climb out, it's time for the move.

When buying the first crib for a new baby, many parents are far from thinking about the time when they will be switching that baby into a bed. Some new parents don't always think that far ahead. On the other hand, when it comes to shopping for nursery furnishings, many parents look to make an investment in the future. They want furniture that will grow with the child, and that also includes the crib. Having the ability to convert baby's crib into a toddler bed and then later, a day bed and full sized bed comes in handy as babies seem to morph into toddlers in an instant.

So if there is foresight to purchase a crib that will grow with your child, when is the right time to actually convert the child to the toddler bed? If a convertible toddler bed hasn't been purchased then the task is when to buy the toddler bed to move the child in to.

If the child is comfortable in the crib and shows no signs of climbing out, there is nothing wrong with leaving them in a crib well past the age of two but most often, two year old start with potty training so it is beneficial for the transition to begin at least by the age of two.

The move from crib to bed is a transition process. Let the child help decide that the right decision is to move to the bed. Make it an exciting process that they had a choice in. If the child is too young and doesn't understand they will have a hard time staying in the bed and may be a little frightened. Even as they are closer to age two and over, the process of the child getting up and being put back in the bed seem endless every night. With persistence, the child will finally realize that the bed is their own and they will love it.

No one can tell parents the right time to make the switch from crib to bed; it's the parent and speaking with the pediatrician that can make that choice.
