Hilton Head Health Releases Its Halloween Survival Guide

As the nation's leading health resort, Hilton Head Health helps dieters enjoy Halloween treats without worrying about being tricked by high calories and sugar overload.

Hilton Head Island, SC (PRWEB) October 24, 2012

Weight gain is a concern for thousands of individuals suffering from high cholesterol, diabetes and complications with obesity this time of year. Hilton Head Health (H3), America's premier weight loss spa and health resort, has released its Halloween Survival guide along with a few healthy recipes from their expert staff.

According to H3 Director of Behavioral Health, Lisette Volz, MSW, LMSW, we have now entered what she calls the “Bermuda Triangle of food holidays” being Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Volz has a few simple tricks to help the weight conscious get through Halloween, one of her favorite holidays:

1. First and foremost, purchase something you know you won't eat for trick-or-treaters! Kids enjoy playing with their food, while adults go for flavor. Think like a kid and choose something that doubles as a toy like a candy necklace or a something with a two-part process like dipping a stick into flavored sugar.

2. Once in your PJ's and given up on answering the doorbell, leave left over candy on the front porch for teenagers to greedily scoop-up. If there is still some left in the morning, toss it in the trash. Don't bring it into work or give it to a neighbor. Everyone is trying to cut back on sugar and no one likes a pusher. It may seem wasteful to throw it out but ask yourself who benefits by keeping it in the house.

3. When your kids come home with pillowcases full of candy, have them dump it out, do their exchange (remember that fun negotiation process?), and then ask them to put all the candy they don't like in a pile. Yes, you will be surprised to find out that kids can be pretty picky when it comes to candy. Toss the dislike pile immediately. You have now probably reduced the amount of candy in the house by half.

Read Volz's full ‘Halloween Survival Guide' on the official H3 blog at There, you will also find tips from H3 fitness and program staff such as this overview of the top five best and worst Halloween candies released by MSNBC last year, as well as healthy recipes from the experienced Chefs at H3 such as this deliciously creepy Severed Finger Sugar Cookie recipe.

Karla Williams, H3 Sous Chef, suggests handing out these fun goodies instead of candy this year. “Granola bars, applesauce and raisins are all treats kids love and will keep you from being tempted to tear into the stash of Halloween candy intended to be passed out. If you're looking for non-food related treats, try mini water bottles, glow sticks, crayons or vampire teeth (my personal favorite).”

Williams promises these treats will leave you and your trick-or-treaters very happy, and not to mention your house will be T.P. (toilet paper) free.
