Local clubs incorporate 57 pink Cybex treadmills into free program that provides women with important tools to avoid, beat breast cancer.

Medway, MA (PRWEB) October 03, 2012

Cybex International, Inc. CYBI, a leading manufacturer of premium exercise equipment, today proudly announced that the YMCA of Middle Tennessee has purchased a record-setting 57 pink Cybex treadmills to raise awareness of the role regular physical activity plays in preventing and/or reducing the recurrence of breast cancer. Many of the treadmills will be used by participants in the Y's After Breast Cancer (ABC) program, which provides comprehensive nutrition, exercise and wellness services free of charge to breast cancer patients and survivors.

“We're honored to work with the YMCA of Middle Tennessee in their outreach and education efforts,” said Lisa Juris, vice president of marketing for Cybex. “This is the biggest single purchase in the four-year history of the Pink Ribbon Run, and it's inspiring to see the YMCA's commitment to fighting breast cancer and to using exercise as a way to empower women to recover from this terrible disease.”

“Pink Cybex treadmills are a great symbol for raising awareness about the importance of exercise in the day-to-day lives of everyone, not just breast cancer patients and survivors,” said Stephanie Kennedy, director of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee's After Breast Cancer program. “These treadmills can play a crucial role in empowering men and women alike to take steps to reduce their risk of cancer or cancer recurrence. And for the women in our ABC program, they're a valuable tool during recovery as the women work to make regular exercise a part of their daily routines.”

The ABC program is a free service to breast cancer patients and survivors in the Middle Tennessee area. During the 16-week program, participants receive full access to the YMCA, a custom wellness plan designed by a Pink Ribbon® Certified trainer, lymphedema education, nutrition counseling from a registered dietician and encouragement and support from caring staff members as well as fellow breast cancer patients and survivors. The program is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Y's Annual Giving Campaign and additional grant funding sources.

“At the Y, we're committed to helping those who need us most in our community, and virtually all of us know someone who has been affected by breast cancer,” said Ted Cornelius, vice president of the YMCA's Center for Health Innovation. “Helping survivors navigate the road to recovery is certainly one way we can meet an emerging community need, and the research tells us that in the process, we'll be helping hundreds of patients improve their survival rates simply by helping them safely start or resume a healthier post-cancer lifestyle.”

A study published in the journal Cancer in June 2012 found that women who engaged in 10 to 19 hours of exercise per week had about a 30 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer. Research conducted by the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that overweight or obese women who lost as little as 5 percent of their body weight through diet and exercise may lower their breast cancer risk by 22 percent. Exercise is also important for women who already have breast cancer. The Yale Exercise and Survivorship Study found that two to three hours of exercise per week resulted in a 40 percent to 67 percent reduced risk of death.

The 57 pink Cybex treadmills are currently located at Y locations across Middle Tennessee, including:

  •     Bellevue Family YMCA
  •     Clarksville Area YMCA
  •     Cool Springs YMCA
  •     Maryland Farms YMCA
  •     Maury County Family YMCA
  •     Putnam County Family YMCA
  •     Rutherford County Family YMCA
  •     Robertson County YMCA

Cybex supports breast cancer research annually through its Pink Ribbon Run. For each mile logged on every new qualifying pink Cybex treadmill during the month of October, Cybex will donate 10 cents to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. More than $100,000 has been raised to date, with this year, the programs' fourth, expected to surpass previous years. Fitness enthusiasts are embracing this initiative more than ever regionally, nationally and internationally. For more information about Cybex's Pink Ribbon Run, please visit http://cybexintl.com.
