The Quebec Landlords Association (APQ) Thinks That a Tax Increase in the Current Context Leaves a Bitter Taste

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 30, 2012) - The City of Montreal is singled out by its mismanagement and by its cost overruns. And today Mr. Gerald Tremblay, the Mayor of Montreal, announces that he wants to raise taxes by 3.3%. The Quebec Landlords Association (APQ) is outraged by this new tax that affects all taxpayers.

Last year Mr. Tremblay considered an average increase of over 3% in 2012 as "a reasonable progression."

"Given the current context, the Quebec Landlords Association (APQ) thinks that this tax increase is odious and reminds us that the cost increases are possibly the result of recently disclosed wrongdoing in the awarding of contracts. Now that all these facts are brought to light, the tax increase certainly leaves a bitter taste for many property owners," says Martin Messier, President of the APQ.

The APQ requests that senior executives should be imputable in case of negligence in their management or in case of fraud.

"We must send a clear message to our leaders by showing them what is unacceptable and that it is not up to the taxpayers, property owners or tenants to assume such error," continues Mr. Messier.

The APQ cautions that tax increases directly affect the price of rent for tenants.

"According to the calculation form issued annually by the Regie du logement each property owner must make the actual calculation and this calculation includes the difference between the amount of taxes of the previous year and the one of the current year. So for the year 2013, one must calculate the difference between the year 2012 and the tax account receivable for 2013," says Martin Messier, President of the APQ.

Moreover, if an owner wishes to apply this increase over several years that would be impossible because nothing that is not claimed in the current year can be requested according to the rules applied by the Regie du logement.

Founded in 1984, the Quebec Landlords Association (APQ) is the largest association providing services to owners of rental housing while being present in all regions of Quebec.
