Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP is pleased to announce that partner Jeffrey I.D. Lewis has been installed as President of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) for the 2012-2013 term. Mr. Lewis was installed at the close of the recent 2012 AIPLA Annual Meeting, October 25-27 in Washington, D.C.
Founded in 1897, AIPLA is a national bar association of over 14,000 members in private and corporate practice, in government service, and in the academic community involved directly or indirectly in the practice of patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and unfair competition law, as well as other fields of law affecting intellectual property. As AIPLA President, Mr. Lewis will be responsible for representing U.S. intellectual property interests throughout the world and guiding AIPLA's domestic intellectual property policy.
“I am honored to have been elected President of an outstanding organization that plays a pivotal role in the global IP landscape,” Mr. Lewis said. “The coming year promises to be one of continuing change as the evolving global economy and ongoing advances in technology raise new challenges for the IP industry. I am excited to have the opportunity to work with AIPLA and its membership to address these issues and help to ensure that our intellectual property system remains strong and serves the best interests of its participants.”
A chemical engineer and Registered Patent Attorney, Mr. Lewis concentrates his practice in patent litigation and patent-related matters. He represents both patent holders and accused infringers in all aspects of patent litigation. Mr. Lewis has represented chemical and pharmaceutical companies, including pharmaceutical innovators in numerous Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) patent litigations, as well as companies in many other areas of technology. He also regularly counsels clients on intellectual property matters, including providing formal opinions and representing them in transactions.
In addition to being President of the AIPLA, Mr. Lewis is also an AIPLA Fellow, recognized for his outstanding service to the association, prominence within the intellectual property profession, learned contributions to the profession, and observance of the highest standards of ethical conduct. Before serving on the AIPLA Board of Directors, Mr. Lewis was Chairman of the AIPLA's Patent Litigation Committee and its Markman Subcommittee on Claim Interpretation, and Vice Chairman of the Patent Law Committee. Mr. Lewis served as Counsel of Record for the AIPLA as amicus curiae in both Quanta Computer, Inc. v. LG Electronics, Inc. and KSR Int'l Co. v. Teleflex Inc. before the U.S. Supreme Court, and appeared for the AIPLA in the seminal en banc Federal Circuit case on patent opinions of counsel, Knorr-Bremse Systeme Fuer Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH v. Dana Corp.
Mr. Lewis also is President of the United States chapter of Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Intellectuelle (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, AIPPI). He is also active in the New York Intellectual Property Law Association, where he currently serves on its Amicus Committee, and previously chaired the Pro Bono Committee, and the American Bar Association's Intellectual Property Section where he chaired a subcommittee on Willful Patent Infringement.
A graduate, cum laude, of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Mr. Lewis has been an adjunct faculty member there since 1999. During law school he also was an Alexander Judicial Fellow to Hon. Marion T. Bennett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He also serves on the Advisory Board of IP Litigator magazine, and is a frequent author and lecturer on patent and patent litigation issues.
