HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

SMSC SMSC, a leading semiconductor company enabling content-rich connectivity systems, today launched a family of energy-efficient, low power 10/100 Ethernet Physical Layer Transceivers (PHYs) for consumer, industrial and enterprise hardware applications. The LAN8740, LAN8741 and LAN8742 offer up to 50 percent lower power consumption than existing SMSC transceivers. Primary applications include set-top boxes, digital video recorders, network printers and servers, IP and video phones, digital televisions, industrial control and embedded systems. In its more than 15 years of designing networking products, SMSC has shipped over 250 million Ethernet ports and is relied upon by a global customer base as a single supplier of a variety of networking products designed to work with a broad range of device architectures.

The LAN8740 and LAN8741 implement the IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet standard directly into the physical layer. IEEE 802.3az is an amendment to the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard, defining mechanisms and protocols intended to reduce the energy consumption of network links during periods of low utilization, by transitioning interfaces into a low-power state. The LAN8742 implements a “Wake on LAN” mode, which allows systems to enter a low power state and wake on desired network traffic, thereby conserving resources during downtimes. These innovations allow customers to upgrade their existing systems for greater energy efficiency simply by changing the Ethernet PHY.

“There is a fast growing demand to conserve system power in nearly all networked systems,” said Rolf Mahler, Vice President and General Manager of SMSC's Industrial and Networking Group. “SMSC addresses this demand through implementation of the Energy Efficiency Ethernet specifications. Now, we are taking these solutions a step further with a more intelligent PHY that allows the system to enter low power sleep states while monitoring select data traffic with ‘Wake On LAN' functionality. In addition, the LAN874x family introduces cable diagnostics capabilities to detect and troubleshoot cable issues as well as deterministic latency for precision timing of data delivery. The result is a family of transceivers that provide an extraordinarily feature-rich, environment-friendly set of Ethernet connectivity solutions.”

The LAN8740, LAN8741 and LAN8742 PHYs have an integrated voltage regulator and ESD protection components. The MAC interface supports flexible I/O voltages from 1.6V to 3.6V required by higher performance ASICs, SoCs and FPGAs which continue to migrate to lower geometry processes requiring lower I/O voltage support. The LAN874x family of devices provides support for flexible I/O voltage to enable a highly optimized system design. The LAN8740, LAN8741 and LAN8742 offer the flexibility of disabling on-chip regulators to reduce system power consumption.

In addition to standard features such as IEEE 802.3/802.3u compliance, UNH interoperability certification, HP Auto-MDIX support and MII/RMII interfaces, the LAN8740, LAN8741 and LAN8742 PHYs deliver additional features:

  • SMSC's flexPWRTM technology for low power consumption & variable I/O voltage support
  • Cable diagnostics for reporting of cable faults and proactive system maintenance
  • Deterministic latency for precision timing in Industrial applications
  • Single 25MHz Crystal design
  • Operation over extended commercial (0 to 70 degree C) and industrial (-40 to 85 degree C) temperature ranges
  • Compact 5x5mm 32QFN (LAN8740, LAN8741) and 4x4mm 24QFN (LAN8742) RoHS compliant packages

Additionally, SMSC provides an easy migration path from current LAN8710 and LAN8720 transceivers to the new LAN8740, LAN8741 and LAN8742 transceivers with minimal redesign efforts. SMSC offers one of the broadest families of Ethernet connectivity solutions in the industry, which include stand-alone transceivers, MAC controllers, integrated single-chip MAC+PHY products, switches and USB to Ethernet bridges.

The LAN8740, LAN8741 and LAN8742 samples and evaluation kits are available now with mass production slated for later in 2012.

Pricing will range from $0.69 to $0.95 in volume production.
