KIDS IN DISTRESS, a South Florida organization to prevent child abuse, preserve the family, and treat children who have been abused and neglected, needs community support. Teenager steps up.

Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) April 18, 2012

KIDS IN DISTRESS helps neglected and abused children. Their goal is to preserve families.

Kurt Wuest is sixteen. A junior at J.P. Taravella High School, he's no stranger to volunteering in a number of community programs, believing strongly that it is up to each of us to make a contribution to make our world a better place, one step at a time.

When Kurt heard about Kids in Distress (KID), a shelter organization that provides refuge for children, newborn to age fifteen, who are victims of neglect or abuse, he knew he wanted to get involved somehow.

“I thought back to when I was younger,” Kurt recalls, “and how reading was a terrific way to escape into a really great story. And when I was really little, if someone read me a story I liked, then I felt this bond with the storyteller. That, I thought, is what these kids need, a way to escape from the sadness that haunts them into a positive, empowering tale that gives them hope and an eagerness to reach out to others instead of withdrawing from life. Books would be a way for me to reach out and help them.”

With that in mind, Kurt Wuest has organized a book drive to encourage people to donate books geared toward children and teenagers to Kids in Distress. The Prescription Pad Pharmacy, 333 N.W. 70th Ave Suite 102, Plantation, FL 33317 has agreed to provide a place for people to drop off the books they'd like to donate.

“We've already collected more than fifty books,” Kurt grins, and I'm confident that this book drive will be a terrific success, a way to show these kids that people care about them. I hope that everyone who reads about us will take a moment to contribute at least one or two books, maybe more.”
