NELSON, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - April 16, 2012) - The grand opening of the newly upgraded Tenth Street Residence at Selkirk College was celebrated today by Ron Cannan, Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.

"Our investment in the Tenth Street Residence at Selkirk College promoted jobs and growth locally and has helped bolster the economy of Nelson," said MP Cannan. "By investing in infrastructure, our Government is creating the right conditions for Canada's continued economic success."

Funding of $3.45 million was provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The project has alleviated the student housing shortage in the Kootenay region.

The residence will provide students with access to affordable and modern housing, and strengthen Selkirk College's ability to attract future students.

Founded in 1967, Selkirk College is the oldest regional college in B.C. The Tenth Street Campus is home to the School of Digital Media and Music, the School of Hospitality and Tourism, as well as the neighbouring Performance Hall.

"For many years, students at Selkirk College, in particular those attending programs in Nelson, were challenged to find affordable housing. More recently the situation was becoming serious enough that in many cases it was affecting their decision regarding whether or not to attend Selkirk College," said Angus Graeme, President of Selkirk College."Adding this residence to the community of Nelson has also made rental accommodation more available. It truly is a win-win for Nelson."

The Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) program is a $1 billion investment in local economies throughout Canada to create jobs and maintain employment in our communities.
