The Results are in – More Power and Fuel Efficiency
Results from the Nebraska Tractor Test Lab indicate that Tier 4A Case IH tractors with SCR technology have set new industry records for fuel-efficient power. Case IH will meet the 2014 Tier 4B (Tier 4 Final) engine emissions standards using exclusively SCR technology – the same technology that is being used to meet Tier 4A standards in high-horsepower tractors.
For example, the Steiger 600 set the record for drawbar horsepower and fuel efficiency versus the competitions' biggest tractor. Measured at maximum power in horsepower-hours-per-gallon, the Steiger 600 tested 8.4 percent more fuel efficient than the Deere 9630 at maximum drawbar pull, and 10.5 percent more fuel efficient at 75 percent drawbar pull maximum power.

The fuel efficiency and enhanced power in the new Case IH SCR tractors provide producers with greater economies of scale and more profit-per-acre.”
Fuel efficiency is extremely important to Brad Ramp of J&A Farms of McLean, Ill. “When you get right down to it, efficiency is the number one thing,” Ramp says. “Every day we have to be efficient. We're out here trying to do a large amount of acres with a limited amount of equipment, to reduce costs. So number one, we can't have any downtime. When we're out in the field, it's down to fuel consumption and maintenance. When it's time to plant, we'll run 24 hours a day – we just don't stop.”
Results by Design – SCR Technology and Research
Case IH made the choice several years ago to focus development efforts on SCR technology. Cool-running and quiet, SCR is an engine exhaust after-treatment system that works outside the engine in the exhaust system. Rather than interfere with engine performance, it actually improves it. Case IH Tier 4B technology will not require regeneration of particulate filters or any Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (CEGR) technology for their high horsepower equipment.
“SCR is hands-down, the best approach for high-horsepower agricultural equipment,” Russell continues. “Especially when you consider the high load requirements for field work and how important fuel efficiency and maintenance costs are to large producers.”
Since 2004, Case IH and Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) have been working together on engine innovations for agricultural equipment that meet Tier 4 regulations and that will take performance to the next level, to increase responsiveness and fuel efficiency in Case IH tractors and combines. FPT produces approximately 2.6 million engines per year and is one of the largest engine manufacturers in the world.
Although FPT has Research & Development centers around the world, their U.S. R&D center is stationed in Burr Ridge, Illinois, along with Case IH's Engineering Facility.
This means that FPT's application engineers, testing engineers, after-treatment experts, and quality experts are working with Case IH's team of tractor engineers and experts to design and test these high-horsepower engines. Before these engines even entered the market, they went through several thousand hours of rigorous testing to make sure they were built to deliver the power and performance you depend on.
“The close partnership between Case IH and FPT means that our customers can be confident in the quality, reliability, and level of expertise supporting Case IH engines,” Russell says. “The partnership also means Case IH dealer service technicians are trained to work on these engines in-house at your local dealership – thus limiting the time and hassle of working with a separate engine dealer.”
Steve Stierwalt, a producer from Sadorus, Ill., needs equipment that is simple to use, especially for his part-time farm help.
“My son and I run a family operation,” says Steve Stierwalt of Sadorus, Ill. “When we have part time people helping us out, it might be a friend or my wife or father-in-law, we need equipment that's easy to learn in a short amount of time. I feel these new tractors are very intuitive as far as the controls go, and that's important… simplicity is important.”

Recently, Case IH released a complete family of high-horsepower equipment utilizing SCR technologies. The introduction of the new Case IH Axial-Flow® 30 Series combines, Patriot® 4430 sprayer and Maxxum® tractors complements the Steiger, Magnum and Puma tractors already in service and confirms the Case IH commitment to better meet producers' needs while also meeting government emissions regulations.
For Case IH customers who have purchased Tier 4A equipment today, there will be no additional requirements in 2014. Filling the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank is all it takes to reduce fuel consumption and extend service intervals.
