TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 8, 2012) - Each year around the world, International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8th. Thousands of events occur not just on this day but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation joins the world in celebrating International Women's Day.

Women's organizations and governments are also observing IWD events that honour women's advancement while diligently reminding all of the need for continued vigilance and action to ensure that women's equality is gained and maintained in all aspects of life. This year, OSSTF/FEESO has encouraged its members to make a difference, think globally and act locally. We must all do our part to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.

OSSTF/FEESO remains committed to promoting a greater understanding and knowledge of women's issues in Ontario schools. "Our newest project Still Not Laughing - Challenging Sexual Harassment In Our Schools provides our members with information to address this form of assault and hate-motivated action." stated Ken Coran.

President Coran also commented that, "We must equip all students with the knowledge, attitude, skills and sense of community they need to challenge obstacles faced by young women. Our goal is to raise awareness of the issues facing women across the world among school-aged students as a first step towards achieving gender equality."

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, early childhood educators, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, university support staff, and many others in education.
